Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca didn’t hold back in his assessment of Enzo Fernández’s performance in yesterday’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City.
The highly anticipated clash saw Chelsea struggle to gain a foothold, and Fernández was singled out as one of the key players who didn’t rise to the occasion.
“Enzo didn’t do well yesterday, and we can’t ignore that,” Maresca said in his post-match interview. “It’s matches like these where we need our top players to step up, and that didn’t happen. No one in this squad is untouchable, and if you’re not performing, you could be replaced.”
Fernández, who has been a mainstay in Chelsea’s midfield, found it difficult to cope with City’s pressure and was unable to influence the game in the way fans have come to expect.
Maresca’s comments make it clear that there’s no room for complacency, even for players of Fernández’s caliber.
The defeat marks another setback for Chelsea in what has been a challenging season so far. With the manager’s words ringing in the ears of the squad, it will be interesting to see how Fernández and the team respond in the upcoming matches.
