Manchester United may be forced to consider the sale of homegrown players, including Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, in order to comply with football’s financial regulations.
Although the club is not actively seeking to sell either player, the reality of their situation means that suitable offers may be considered. As both players have come through United’s youth setup, midfielder Mainoo, 19, and winger Garnacho, 20, would generate a pure accounting profit if sold. Consequently, they are not regarded as indispensable, similar to most of the first-team squad.
This also applies to teammates like Marcus Rashford, 27, whose situation is distinct, as United is actively working on exit solutions, and the forward has expressed a desire for a new challenge. Rashford’s representatives have engaged in exploratory talks with AC Milan regarding a potential loan deal in the January transfer window.
This does not apply to Mainoo or Garnacho, as both appear to be integral to head coach Ruben Amorim’s plans. Despite being omitted from United’s squad for the recent Manchester City derby, alongside Rashford, Garnacho seems to be a key player.
However, Mainoo’s contract, which expires in the summer of 2027 and includes a 12-month extension option, has sparked uncertainty regarding his future. There have been no developments on a new contract for the England international. In contrast, Garnacho committed to a new deal last year, securing his services until June 2028. Given their talent, both players would likely attract numerous suitors.
Mainoo has been linked to Chelsea by the Daily Mail, with the club reportedly admiring him. However, this interest is not unique to Mainoo, and no concrete actions have been taken.
